Born in Washington, D.C., Rick is a native of southern Maryland. He has lived in Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama, but his formative years were spent in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina.
He received his B.A. in American History/Political Science from Carson-Newman University, Jefferson City, Tennessee (1976); Masters of Divinity with Religious Education from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, North Carolina (Dec. 1983); Doctor of Ministry from The Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (2005).
Rick has served as a church staff minister in Tennessee and North Carolina since 1973 in the capacity of Music, Christian Education, and Youth Ministry. He has been pastor at First Baptist since October, 2009.
Rick is married to the former Edwina Graham from Jonesville, Virginia. They have two children and two wonderful grandsons!!
Chris Tomlin, 27, lives in Farmville with his wife, Brooke, and daughter, Ella Grace. Chris is employed with Modlin’s Welding as a TIG welder. His wife, Brooke, is a pediatric nurse at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC.
Chris accepted Christ and was baptized into the membership of First Baptist Church in 2013. He enjoys spending time with family, friends, community activities, weight training, as well as indoor and outdoor sports. “Farmville and First Baptist Church is our home and we plan to raise our family here.” And First Baptist is proud to have Chris serving as our Minister with Youth!
Kathryn Sauls is a graduate of the East Carolina School of Music: BM’75, MM’76, and Music Specialist 6th year degree ’81. She is the director of the First Baptist Church Adult choir and the children’s choir. This is her 7th year as choir director of the Farmville First Baptist Church. Ms. Sauls is also a retired public music school teacher with 30 years of experience in the state of NC at Farmville Middle School and Farmville Central High School. After retirement, Ms. Sauls taught 3 years at the Sallie B Howard Charter School in Wilson, NC and she is currently in her 4th year as a part-time choral teacher at the Oakwood School in Greenville, NC. She is married to Coach Dixon Sauls and has two children, Lindsay and Robyn.
Justin Sturz is the organist/pianist at the First Baptist Church in Farmville, NC, and a freelance collaborative pianist in the East Carolina University School of Music and throughout the southeast. He holds two undergraduate degrees from ECU, in English with a minor in journalism, and Organ Performance/Sacred Music. While earning his degree in music, he placed second in the Music Teachers’ National Association-Wurlitzer Collegiate Artist National Organ competition (1993) and third in the National Undergraduate Organ Competition held annually at the First Presbyterian Church in Ottumwa, Iowa (1995). Justin has two recordings, “Songs of Faith” and “Inspirational Favorites.” His wife, Sarah, sings, and they perform together in many various venues. They have three children (Jason, Jonathan and Johanna) and they live in Greenville, NC.
